James Beard, America's "father of gastronomy," grew up here, helping make famous the Pacific northwest bounty from seafood to wild game, vegetables, fruits and nuts. Portland's top chefs, often spotted at the Portland Farmers Market, are forever sniffing out sources for revitalizing their already fresher-than-fresh menus. Northwest Portland, also known as "Nob Hill," spills over with restaurants including chef / owner Cory Schreiber's Wildwood, Besaw's Café with its great breakfasts within a historic setting, and Paley's Place, serving upscale fare in a Victorian home. Ethnic cuisines from Asian to Moroccan and Portuguese are popular in Portland along with tried-and-true traditional favorites. On the route of the new Portland Streetcar, BridgePort Brewing Company, Oregon's first craft brewery, is in a building once housing a factory that made ropes for sailing vessels, and its tasting room overlooks copper brew tanks imported from Bavaria.
